Merry christmas!

HI everyone!

Things in Spain are going great, meeting girlfriend, family, girlfriend, friends, girlfriend... ;)
The best things about being in Spain: bread! meat! churros with hot chocolate! hehe I think I am pulling some weight here...

Now we are getting ready for dinner(which in Spain is quite late as you know) and we will be 15, fun assured; although not as much as in block E :(

I wish you all merry christmas and I hope santa is good to you ;)

See you, soon!!!

Just to create the mood, a little symbol in da kitchen dowstairs.
We miss you. Please come back!!

A Kitchen Party is waiting for you.
Have a nice time at home or wherever you are.
See ya soon.

I love you all.

Hey Block E people

I hope everyone had a good journey home.
And that Block E is healthy again and not too bored with
just half of the usual party crew.
(Fredi, alte Sackziegel :), und Jenny, kleines Turteltäubchen :), still ill ?!)
(i really enjoy having ä ö ü on the keyboard again :)

I arrived home in the good old east right now, and -
we're gonna get white xmas here :)

London was great. Much better than the rest of England.
For me the greatest Highlights were Tower Bridge and
Wembley Stadium. I'm afraid that we couldn't see
London together somehow.

Would be cool if others want to let Block E know about their
experiences as well.

Cheers from Thüringen (Home of Bratwurst :)

Sinterklaas at Block E

Sint Nicolaas, Sinterklaas or just De Sint. All different ways to address this old saint. With his long white beard and friendly low voice, he still has a more important position in the Netherlands than Santa Clause.

December the 6th is his deathday, but is currently referred to as his birthday. It is the day and preceding evening most Dutch children look forward too, as this day they will receive a lot of presents. Or, if you have been bad, it is a day to avoid, as Sinterklaas and his helper Zwarte Piet (Black Pete) may slap you with a rod and put you in a bag back to Spain. And yes, Sinterklaas knows everything, because he has a big book in which it says if you have been good or bad, and when he ask to sit on his fragile lap, he will ask all about what you have been up too. So be aware and don´t do anything stupid, because you will regret it. So from now on.... don´t get drunk/stoned or steal anyones crisps or milk. Say you love the freshly baked cookies, because they put a lot of effort in it.

Some time before the big festivities, Sinterklaas has to come all the way from Spain with his steamboat, facing the terrible weather at the Bay of Biscay. Every year it is a mirracle that he arrives alive at the harbour in the Netherlands. When his steamboat arrives, everybody cheers, trying to get a glimps of Sinterklaas and his white horse. The Zware Pieten are dancing and doing tricks, throwing candy at the children, especially pepernoten and taai taai poppen. From this moment on, Sinterklaas will walk on the roofs every night with his horse and Pieten. He will put little presents, pepernoten and mandarins in the shoes of the children who put their shoes at the chimney with a little note for de Sint and a carrot or sugercube for his horse. The children sing songs before going to bed and they are not able to sleep the whole night. This makes it hard for the parents to sneek to the chimney to slip something in their childens shoes and bite of a piece of the carrot. Disaster when the children find out it is actually not Sinterklaas who leaves them a present.

On Sinterklaas evening, there will be a loud banging on the window (often the neighbour) and there will be a big bag of present, sometimes with poems or suprise wrappings. The poems are all written and signed by Sinterklaas, or one of his Zwarte Pieten, often Poem Piet, or Present Piet, or any other Piet you can imagine or come up with. In the poems the receiver is confronted with it´s own life, either good, or bad, or very embarrasing.

This year, Sinterklaas will also cross the North Sea and pay a visit to the United Kingdom, with special attention to Leeds, St. Marks, Block E, on the 9th of December. He needs a lot of help from Assistant Sinten and Pieten, who focus on one person. So to all Sinterklazen and Zwarte Pieten, keep track of your persons private life, write notes in your big book and buy a suitable present. Maybe you may even spank someone with a rod......

Digital village tries to hector Block E

Do you know what the verb "to hector" means? If not ... look it up!

And by the way: we've been to the accomodation office (you should go there to see under what nice conditions they can work there because of our money). Anyway, they told us that they pay £2.3 per student and week for the internet. If the refund will be the costs we paid for inet then you can calculate it yourself that it would be around £40.

Cheers
Rene

Trip to Birmingham/Brighton Dec 14-16

Hey everyone!

Several people and me are planning to go on a trip to Birmingham and Brighton.
I have now looked up times+fares for traveling and staying overnight on lots of
different pages. After comparing everything I got to the following cheapest results:

+ 14/12 Leeds-Birmingham by train 7:05-9:06 £9 or 11:16-13:36 £10
+ 14/12 - 15-12 staying overnight in a backpacker hostel without
breakfast £16
+ 15/12 Birmingham-Brighton by train 9:33-13:37 £12
+ 15/12 - 16/12 staying overnight again in a backpacker hostel
without breakfast £18
+ 16/12 Brighton-Leeds by coach 16:30-23:25 £28.8
+ 16/12 Brighton-Stansted by coach 14:00-18:35 £29 --> I think it's just me
who's going to Stansted, but feel free to join

That means roughly costs for travelling of £50 and costs for staying overnight of £35. Additional we have to consider that we need food and beverages as well. So in a whole we would end up close to £100!
I think that's a lot. The travelling will not become cheaper but maybe we could look for better/cheaper hostels. The problem is that there're no YHs in both of the cities. I also couldn't find any B&B places.(with breakfast included we would save adiitional money for for and it would be pretty comfortable as well :)
So I would be happy if you could have an even closer look for good hostels. Otherwise I don't know whether it would really make sense.
Have a nice evening+rest of the week ...

PS: If someone could call McGyver that'll be great. Because regarding problems like this it is always of interest what McGyver would do.

Trip to Oxford/Cambridge Nov 24/25

Hoi zaeme! (= hi everyone :-)

Hector and me are planning to go on a trip to Oxford and Cambridge for the last Nov weekend.
Right now I've had a pretty long session looking up fares and times. I came to the point that the best solution should be the following one:

+ 24/11 Leeds-Cambridge by train 8:15-10:44 £22.5
+ watching Cambridge, the Uni, having fun, whatsoever £0.0 :)
+ staying overnight in Cambridge YH £16.5 B&B
+ 25/11 Cambridge-Oxford by coach 8:10-11:25 £9.0
+ watching Oxford&the Uni there
+ 25/11 Oxford-Leeds by train 19:36-0:15 £20.5

The main problem from my point of view are the partly long travelling times and the price.
That means costs in a whole would be roughly £70 plus sth to eat there. But on the other hand, for one weekend it's actually not that bad.
I also tried to do the trip the other way round but fares and times were not so good. I furthermore had a look at fares&times for weekend trips to just one of both destinations. The travelling times would be even worse but the costs would be up to £20 less.
I'm happy about comments, better solutions and people who want to join us!
Have a nice week ...

Kirkstall abbey

I want to go to kirkstall abbey on saturday the 20th. It is a huge church in ruins, surrounded by plains with grass and such.

If anyone wants to join, I will probabily be leaving at 11(although the definitive time depends on friday night :P) and returning 2 or 3 hours later. The place is just 35 minutes away from st marks, via walk and bus. I dont know the price for the bus ticket but it will be something around 1 or 2£.

See you!

Block E Cocktail: The recipe

Here is the recipe for the original, one and only Block E COCKtail®.

The most important ingredients (You need them to make it work):
  • Vodka (or something stronger) We really encourage you to use Morrinov or something even cheaper.
  • Coffee : Better if its old, bad done, or with muddy water.
  • Ice cubes. 3 or more per pint.

Optional ingredients(Add as many as you want, minimum of 2)
  • Fruit squash. Any flavour will suit.
  • Coke or other soft drinks.
  • Use your imagination.

Mix it all together and enjoy your drink!

To make the taste better it really helps to have some beers previously.

We are not responsible for any crazy dancing, kitchen damage, hangovers etc this cocktail may cause.
